First there was the lake, then came Lakeway. Initial development
of Lakeway began in 1962, when 10 investors headed by Lee Blocker
purchased approximately 880 acres on the shores of Lake Travis known as
Josey Ranch. The investors, a group of Houston businessmen, had been
researching the Lake Travis area as a potential resort hotel site. Not
unlike today's first-time visitors to Lakeway, these investors
were captivated by the natural beauty of Lake Travis and the surrounding
Hill Country terrain. They realized immediately that the site was not
only appropriate for a first-class resort hotel community, but the scope
of its ultimate development potential was eminently greater. A master
plan was born that would involve an entire hotel/resort/residential
development, and construction started on a 50-room portion of the
Lakeway Inn. Since then, the Lakeway Inn has undergone a total
renovation and has expanded to 240 Lake View Rooms with 26 indoor
& outdoor tennis courts in the area, that are available to the Inn's guests.During 1972, planning began on what is known as the Yaupon Golf
Course. At that time, Alpert also approached the World Championship
Tennis Association about the possibility of a joint venture to build a
world class tennis facility.
In 1974, the City of Lakeway was incorporated and elected its first
mayor, Newton C. Herndon. That was the year that the first major event,
the CBS Tennis Classic, was held at the World of Tennis Center, putting
Lakeway into the national spotlight.
Residential construction continued at a relatively rapid pace during
the 1970s. The success of the World of Tennis Center prompted Alpert to
consider expansion of Lakeway into a third phase, known as the
Hills of Lakeway. The concept was to design a luxury, single-family
residential development around the ultimate in recreational facilities.
In 1971, Alpert began planning an eighteen hole championship golf course
to complement the World of Tennis facility and to become the central
focus of the Hills of Lakeway development.

In 1980, the city of Austin granted the City of Lakeway the right to
expand its current extraterritorial jurisdiction (ETJ). In 1981,
construction was started on the current village hall and the Hills of
Lakeway pro shop and clubhouse. That same year, the Academy of Golf
facility was completed, Lakeway Independent School District was
established, and construction began on the Village Shopping Center, a
36,233-square-foot multi-tenant retail center. The Lake Travis High
School was completed in 1983 on land donated by the owners of Lakeway.
By the end of 1987, more than 600 students attended the school. Several
new condominium projects were either initiated or completed in that
year.
In April 1990, the Village of Lakeway was reincorporated as the City
of Lakeway. Today the City of Lakeway is a mixed-use resort development,
consisting of 5,375-acre, recreation-oriented, planned community
incorporating some of the nation's most widely acclaimed sports and
recreational facilities.
Located on the shores of Lake Travis, on one of the Texas Hill
Country's most beautiful lakes, Lakeway stretches across hills, meadows,
and streams, concluding with a magnificent view of the lake from atop
60- to 90-foot high limestone cliffs on its southern shores. The Texas
Hill Country long has been a destination, vacation, and retirement spot
for residents of major metropolitan cities throughout Texas and the
surrounding states. The natural beauty of the Hill Country, the
outstanding climate, and proximity of Lakeway to Austin is an unbeatable
combination.
After more than two decades of growth, Lakeway has become a
harmonious combination of permanent, vacation, and weekend residences.
Residents enjoy a country ambiance and unparalleled amenities within 30
minutes of downtown Austin. Lakeway's blend of extraordinary scenic
beauty, with controlled growth and quality recreational resources,
offers many more exciting years of growth on the remaining undeveloped
Lakeway property.
Expansion of local shopping centers, medical care services, and area
restaurants in the Lakeway area is facilitating a shift away from the
original concept of a first-class weekend home and retirement community
to one which meets the needs of the full spectrum of potential homeowner
requirements. As a result, current population studies indicate a rapidly
growing number of younger families who are primary residents at Lakeway.
There is no question that the direction of growth in Austin is westward
toward Lakeway.
Lake Travis Area Overview
The City of Lakeway has approximately 8,000 residents.
It has been growing at a rate of more than 22% per annum since
1980.
The largest employer is the Lake Travis Independent School District,
but more than 600 other small businesses provide a sound employment base
offering services which include health care, legal, real estate, and a
variety of retail and restaurant opportunities. In addition, several
larger corporations such as Vista Chemical, 3M, SAS Institute, and
Schlumberger have located their facilities in the Lake Travis area. The
residential and recreational facilities offered by Lake Travis, as well
as the improved infrastructure connecting the area to the city of
Austin, should continue to draw new business opportunities to the Lake
Travis area in the years to come.
The Lake Travis Independent School District was established in 1981.
This rapidly growing district has distinguished itself as a leader in
education within the Austin area, with a reputation for high achievement
in public education. The enrollment base is now more than 3,700
students, and the curriculum ranges from the basic learning skills to
high honors courses, computer instruction, leadership, and
extra-curricular activities.
